I’m so glad to have you here today! It’s going to be a great episode. I’m going to share with you why email marketing CRUSHES social media, and I have the proof to back it up. I’m going to be totally honest with you and hope this is eye-opening and will help you spend more time focused on things that will actually help you grow your business.
Personally, I’ve been using email marketing for years and think it’s one of the best ways to grow your business. I’ve seen great success with it and so have many of my students in the past. Today, I want you to pay special attention to the numbers that I am going to share with you.
They are going to be eye-opening and may change your mind about social media and growing your following. Before you focus all your energy on growing your social media accounts, I want you to finish this episode.
You’ll be amazed at how useful email marketing can be compared to social media, and in the long run, you’ll spend a lot less time doing it in the long run and create a much bigger impact. You may even be surprised at the positive impact it will have on your business.
As I mentioned before, we’re going to be talking all about email marketing so stay tuned. I want to bring awareness to the problem I see with businesses on social media. Now I do believe that it has a place for your business.
In fact, if you have a brand, you should definitely have a Facebook business page. However, it’s not just there to post random content. If all you’re doing is posting on a regular basis, you’re going to struggle to grow your reach. Instead, it should be used to run your Facebook ads and create a custom audience.
You shouldn’t be sending a lot of time creating content solely for your Facebook page or any other social media platform. Your reach is going to be very small, and in my opinion, it’s a waste of time.
Is Social Media Worth The Time?
You might think the more you post, the more people who follow you. That’s just not true. Their algorithm is ever-changing, and I even struggle with getting a good reach, even with thousands of followers. There are so many hoops they want you to jump through, and it takes way too much time. There are much better ways to grow your business, and they take less time.
I am here to share with you the numbers that I get for social media vs. email so you can see the difference. If you’re not yet building your list after reading this, you’re probably going to change your mind. They really will blow your mind. I am also going to share with you some of the emails that I have created and how we’ve gotten several emails to a 50% open rate. That is considered a high open rate, but the average is around 22% which is still really great.
In regards to social media, I just post when I want to or have something valuable to share with my audience. I’m not doing it to manipulate the algorithm, and I’m not worried about trying to grow my reach. It’s not worth my time. Instead, I do it to help my audience and to build a custom audience in the background.
That’s the main reason why I focus on live videos for social media. I can use those for my Facebook ads and target specific people who have engaged with my past content. Like I said before, social media does have a place in your business, but it should never consume all your time and energy.
The Numbers Behind Social Media
I am going to share some stats with you directly from Sprout Social. They are a very well-known organization that I trust. They’ve done research regarding the average engagement rates on social media.
The average Twitter engagement rate is 0.045%. That is across all industries. Personally, I have approx. 19,000 followers, but I don’t post every day, and I can tell you that my engagement rate is really low, that’s partly why I don’t spend much time there.
The average engagement rate on Instagram is 1.22%. The best industry on Instagram is only at a 3.7% engagement rate. That’s not all that exciting for me, especially with all the hard work I would have to put into creating content for that platform.
Here’s another shocking stat. The average Facebook engagement is only 0.09%. That is extremely low. If you’re just focused on growing your brand organically, that is a waste of time. I have 33,000 followers on Facebook, but I’m not getting much reach. For example, in a recent post I created, I only received two likes out of 33,000 followers.
My reach was only 346 people. That means those are the only people who saw it in their news feed out of everyone who follows me even though I post regularly and create several videos a week.
So, you can see that social media really isn’t worth the time if all you’re looking to do is grow your following organically. It’s nearly impossible with the way the algorithms are set up. Also, keep in mind that you don’t want to waste time and money on a platform that is only going to get you minimal results. This excludes Facebook ads, though.
The Amazing Numbers Behind Email Marketing
Ok, are you ready for another shocking stat? The average open rate for email marketing is 20.9%. That’s the honest truth! It’s much higher than any of the social media platforms. The other great part about your email list is that you own it.
You can move it to another hosting platform whenever you’d like, and you can drive traffic wherever you’d like them to go. You can also send any content that you’d like, within reason, of course. With social media, you don’t have any control, and your account could be removed or suspended at any time.
I’m going to share with you the numbers behind a recent email I sent out for one of my brands. It did amazingly well. We sent the email to 589 people. We had a 73.5% open rate and a 25% click-through open rate. Keep in mind. This is well above average, so don’t expect these numbers every day.
However, it goes to show the opportunity that you could have with email marketing compared to social media. As you continue to send emails to your audience, you’ll improve your technique and quickly learn what works and what doesn’t.
If you start a business or already have, you’ve got to put in the work, or you won’t be able to succeed. Why wouldn’t you want to invest in an email list that is going to help you grow your business? It’s much more affordable than you might think, especially when you can find the right people who are interested in your products or services.
Your list really is priceless if you’re able to engage with your audience and share upcoming promotions with your audience. I highly recommend spending your time and money on something that you control and will reach the most people possible.
If you want to make money, you do have to invest a little bit. I built a list of 520 subscribers in 14 days as a case study. I spent just over $300 dollars. So now I have a very active list of people who are interested in what I have to say. That’s not bad at all. You just have to be ready to take action and give it a try.
Another thing to keep in mind, if you ever sold your brand, your email list carries a lot of weight and creates benefits for the new owner. It would definitely help you sell your business for much more if you have an active list and your open/click-through rates are high. Potential buyers care more about that than a large following on social media.
