Today we're going to mix things up a little bit and do something different. I've never done this before but am excited. We're going back in the archives, and I'm going to play for you one of my favorite episodes of all time with one of my past guests.
The lessons from this episode are so actionable, timely, and things that we can each do on a regular basis. I'm referring to episode 897 with Jeff Woods. He shares how he became part of the “One Thing” family and how you can adopt this practice into your own life.
We all get off track at times, but the key is recognizing that we lost our way and being willing to get back on track. If you want to see positive results, you have to take action and be willing to put in the work even when it's not easy. Jeff is going to take this concept to a deeper level and will provide valuable clarity into how you can find the one thing that will help you move forward with your goals. Let's get right to it.
The One Thing from Jeff's Perspective
This is the simple truth behind extraordinary results. Back in the day, I was a medical device salesman. I woke up every day feeling happy but didn't feel fulfilled. Life was good, but I felt like I was meant for more. When my wife had our first child, she made the decision to become a stay at home mom and shortly after, the company I worked for cut back on our commission structure, and I lost 40% of my salary.
I discovered that I was missing mentors in my life. I had some amazing friends, but I didn't have anyone to help guide me where I wanted to me. This set me on my journey to find my mentors. I wanted to surround myself with successful people that I can learn from and be motivated by.
Always Give Before Your Ask
My goal from the start was to upgrade my five. The five people that I spend most of my time with. I started spending a lot of time going out of my way to meet these types of people. Most people showed up to the conventions I attended, looking to see what they could get.
I saw that the most successful people always came ready to give. They wanted to see what people needed the most and always asked how they could help. Even very successful people were asking this question. I know that if I wanted to spend my time with these kinds of people, I needed to act the same and be willing to give before asking for anything in return.
I realized that I didn't always have to be the one providing the solution. I could always help find the right person who could help them. The key was being willing to go out of my way to help. I was always happy to help make introductions when I knew someone that could help. You should always be willing to offer your help several times before asking for anything in return. It'll go a long way when you're building relationships.
You need to be able to deposit goodwill in the bank so you can make a withdrawal when you need to.

Yes, Send Me The Roadmap! Why I Created the “Mentee” Podcast
When I started to upgrade my five, I went to several networking events to meet new mentors. I was able to surround myself with several very successful people. I decided to create a podcast called “The Mentee.” It was a place where I could share my story of how I found my mentors and what I learned from each of them.
A lot of my listeners wanted to learn how to find their first mentor. So, I started making money by pre-selling a course teaching people how to do that. From there, I created a community of people and brought in some of my own mentors to talk with my listeners. I was able to make over $100,000 in ten months. It took a lot of hard work and dedication to find out what my community wanted, but it paid off in the end.
The Power of the Domino Effect
I don't really remember what was said in the conference that I attended where I discovered the “One Thing.” I just remember the way that I felt.
The path to getting everything you want starts by getting one thing at a time. You have to think big, go small and trust the dominos will fall as they should. We all have big goals. However, the path to getting there is to take it one small step at a time. You have to identify the “one thing” that you do every day to get to your big goal.
What most people do is think big and find an answer and run with it. However, it's important to first look at everything you could do and then look at the one thing you should do. You have to spend some time being willing to evaluate all your actions before you run with an answer.
The question you should be asking yourself is “what's the one thing you can do, such that by doing it, everything else would be easier or unnecessary?”
You have to go small enough in order to see the results that you're looking for. You have to trust that if you do the right things, you'll accomplish your goals. Your time is precious, so you need to focus on the “One Thing”. It's also important to be willing to search for the right answer. The average person spends their time and doesn't invest it.
Plan Ahead for The Most Success
It's so important to reverse engineer the process. Start by focusing on imaging where you want to be and getting really clear on how you'll identity if you're going to be successful.
It's important to visualize your life ten or twenty years in the future and take a step back and see what you need to do today in order to be on track and stay in alignment with the vision that you have for your life. By doing that it makes it so much easier to say no to the things that don't matter.
We're in the business of time. It's our most valuable resource. The problem is that most people spend their time and don't invest it. Everything that our business does is helping people investing their time wisely so they can see the best results. We've built a community of people living the “One Thing” method.
We create content that engages people's trust. That drives the growth of the database and the customer base, which drives profit and funds technology.
It's essential to lay out your week beforehand and make sure you identify what needs to be done. Once you put it into your calendar, you'll be much more motivated to accomplish your goals.
We understand how to have a relationship with other people, but we don't know how to have a relationship with our goals. You don't need to learn how to set more goals, instead, you need to learn how to have a relationship with your goals. To the point that every week you can evaluate if you're off track and what you can do to get back on track. It's not about the result. It's about the behavior.
Final Note from Scott
If you are thinking about how to implement the “One Thing” into your life, it's time to do it! There are a lot of things that you have to do in order to build your brand. However, you have to focus on the “One Thing” if you want to see success. It's all about taking it one day at a time and staying focused on what you need to do today to get to your long-term goals.
